  • What: NCAA Football Regular Season Game
  • When: October 19, 2024
  • Who:  Georgia vs. Texas
  • Time:  7:30 p.m. ET
  • Where: Darrell K Royal Texas Stadium (Austin, TX)

One of the season’s most highly anticipated college football games will unfold this Saturday evening as the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs head to Austin to take on the No. 1 Texas Longhorns.

Georgia and Texas have not faced each other in the regular season since 1958 when the Longhorns emerged victorious with a score of 13-8 in Darrell Royal’s second season as head coach.

However, they did cross paths in the 2019 Sugar Bowl, with Texas defeating Georgia, 28-21.

Georgia Bulldogs

With a 5-1 record, the Bulldogs aim to avoid a second loss, which could jeopardize their chances of making the playoffs.

Georgia has not lost a game to another team other than Alabama for over three years, with a win streak of 50 games dating back to 2020. This streak is at risk this weekend in Austin. Additionally, Georgia has not lost consecutive road games since 2013.

The Bulldogs have been dominant in college football, winning six of their last seven games against AP Top 5 teams with a margin of victory greater than 21 points.

Recently, Georgia’s defense has revealed some vulnerabilities. In their third game of the season against the Kentucky Wildcats, the Bulldogs allowed the Wildcats to rush 45 times for 170 yards.

This was the most rushing yards Georgia has allowed since Georgia Tech put 205 on them in Week 12 last season. Additionally, they had 16 missed tackles, a stark contrast to last year when they didn’t have double-digit missed tackles in any game.

Their secondary has displayed vulnerabilities, especially when facing top-tier passing offenses. Alabama’s Jalen Milroe took advantage of these weaknesses, delivering a stellar performance in the win over Georgia. Milroe had 374 yards passing along with two touchdowns through the air and two more on the ground.

Texas Longhorns

On the other side of the field, Texas is looking to make its mark on the national stage in its first game against an SEC powerhouse.

The Longhorns, still undefeated, dominated Oklahoma with a 35-3 victory in the Red River Rivalry. Getting past Georgia would get them closer to securing a spot in the SEC title game.

Texas’ dominant defense will be on display. The Longhorns have only allowed 15 points in their two games against ranked opponents and 38 points all season.

Texas is proving to be the most well-rounded team in the nation, excelling in offensive output, passing efficiency, and defensive strength.

Quarterback Quinn Ewers will likely find success passing against the Georgia secondary, which has shown vulnerabilities against less skilled quarterbacks. Ewers leads the Longhorns with 890 yards passing, nine touchdowns and three interceptions.

With an average of 43 points and 495 total yards per game, the Longhorns are demonstrating a balanced offense that relies on team cohesion rather than individual stars, thanks to their impressive depth across the roster.

The Longhorns’ offense has been outstanding. They could potentially exploit the Bulldogs struggling defense, which has allowed an average of 24 points per game in SEC play.

However, Texas is unlikely to stifle Georgia’s offense, as it is savvy and experienced after numerous deep playoff runs. While the Texas defense has shown strength this season, it may not be as formidable as it appears.

Quarterback Carson Beck is expected to make explosive plays, and Georgia should find its offensive groove. Beck has over 1800 yards passing with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Bulldogs-Longhorns Best Bet

This game promises to be an exhilarating back-and-forth battle between two high-powered offenses. The total is fairly high, with oddsmakers placing a 57-point mark on the board.

On the other hand, I expect this game to be a high-scoring affair, similar to the Georgia-Alabama game.

It might even come down to the wire and potentially head into overtime. Over 57 points is the best bet in this one.

Is Alabama on upset watch against rival Tennessee?
