Has anyone been able to check out the first wave of votes for this years All-Star game in Phoenix? A’ja Wilson leads all players with 217,773, closely followed by Caitlin Clark at 216,427. Wilson and Clark are the only two players who have surpassed the 200,000 mark so far. So what’s the big deal here?

Last year’s initial voting had A’ja Wilson as the leader but only at 35,968 votes. This is a dramatic increase from this season, this is another case of the Caitlin Clark effect. It’s pretty safe to say that we’re going to see record numbers in the next round of votes. The All-Star game in Phoenix is already sold out so the anticipation is already crazy.
This is great for women’s basketball that more people are tunning into the WNBA games more and get to appreciate how great these athletes are. The country gets to see Wilson who’s the best player in the world right now zeroing in on the best seasons in WNBA history. This is perfect timing because if this was happening last year then the country would have been missing out on what could be a very historic season. The Las Vegas Aces chasing a 3 peat is something very rare in the WNBA. The last team to pull off a 3 peat was the Houston Comets over 20 years ago.
All-Star format
Once the voting concludes, players in the top 10 who haven’t been selected for the USA will join the roster of the WNBA All-Stars team. The remaining spots in the 12-player roster will then be filled by a selection of the next 36 highest vote-getters, as chosen by the 12 WNBA head coaches who cannot vote for their own players.
