LAS VEGAS — Sebastian Fundora isn’t wasting time. Fresh off a brutal stoppage win over Keith Thurman, the WBC super welterweight champion already has his sights set on his next challenge and it’s a big one. Jermell Charlo.

Charlo Looms as Biggest Test Yet

Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs) hasn’t fought since his 2023 loss to Canelo Alvarez at 168 pounds. But at 154, his resume speaks for itself: Former undisputed champion that never lost his belts in the ring. Despite the inactivity, Charlo would represent the most accomplished opponent of Fundora’s career. Notably, Charlo was ringside for the Thurman fight a clear sign of interest.

This will be the second straight inactive fighter that Fundora fights if this fight just so happens to go through. As challenging as it seems, Charlo’s ring rust might make this a way easier fight than it could be if he was more of an active fighter still.

Timing Shapes the Division

While Fundora remains open to unification bouts, the division’s schedule complicates things.

  • Xander Zayas (WBA/WBO champion) is set to face Jaron Ennis on June 27
  • Josh Kelly holds the IBF title

That leaves Fundora needing an opponent and Charlo is the biggest available name.

Why This Fight Matters

For Fundora:

  • Opportunity to defeat a former undisputed champion
  • Legitimize his claim as the best at 154
  • Elevate his profile to superstar level

For Charlo:

  • Return after long inactivity
  • Chance to reclaim relevance
  • Immediate title opportunity

Sebastian Fundora is riding momentum. Jermell Charlo is chasing redemption. And with both fighters aligned under the same promotional banner…This fight feels inevitable. If it gets made, it won’t just be another title defense. It could define the future of the junior middleweight division.
