Devin Haney and his father, Bill Haney, are set to appear in court April 6 following their arrests in connection to a January altercation at Madison Square Garden. According to court records, both Haney, 27, and his father, 55, were arrested on Feb. 1 and charged with misdemeanor assault stemming from a Jan. 30 incident. The altercation involved welterweight boxer Delante Johnson, also known as “Tiger” Johnson.
Authorities say:
- The incident occurred around 4 p.m. ET
- Two individuals allegedly punched a 27-year-old victim multiple times
- The victim suffered bruising and pain to the face and body
- He was transported to a hospital and listed in stable condition
Johnson’s manager later confirmed he was the victim.
Altercation Caught on Camera
The incident was widely circulated after being captured from multiple angles including during a live DAZN broadcast. At the time, Haney was in New York for media obligations tied to an event headlined by Teofimo Lopez Jr. and Shakur Stevenson. The confrontation followed a long-standing online feud between Haney and Johnson.
Haney and his father were arraigned on Feb. 18 in New York Criminal Court, where both entered not guilty pleas. Their next court appearance is scheduled for April 6. Shortly after the incident, Haney appeared to downplay the situation on social media, posting: “NY is cold … I gotta go turn myself into jail in a few hours #Freemeeee.”
Impact on Haney’s Career
The legal situation adds uncertainty around one of boxing’s biggest names. Haney, a former undisputed lightweight champion, remains a central figure in ongoing discussions involving:
- Title fights
- Major pay-per-view matchups
- High-profile rivalries
But this case could:
- Create distractions outside the ring
- Affect public perception
- Potentially impact future opportunities depending on its outcome
What started as a heated rivalry has now moved into the legal system. As Devin Haney and his father await their next court date, the situation remains unresolved and under scrutiny. For one of boxing’s biggest stars, the focus has temporarily shifted from championships to the courtroom.
