Boxing really sucked last weekend! Last weekend bouts were very lackluster to stay the least. On Friday there was boxing on Time Square that featured three co-main event fights. The first fight was between Teofimo López vs Barboza. Followed by Devin Haney vs Jose Ramirez, the last fight featured Ryan Garcia vs Rolando Romero.
López vs Barboza was a competitive fight. Both fighters had their moments but it was López coming out on top by retaining his WBO super lightweight championship. Devin Haney beat Jose Ramirez in what was considered a shutout. The fight wasn’t really that entertaining for fans that like to have more action. The last fight between Rolando Romero vs Ryan Garcia was an ok fight as well. The highlight of that fight was when Romero dropped Garcia with a left hook in the 2nd round. From that point on Garcia was scared to really throw after getting his chin checked. Romero cruised to an easy decision against Garcia in his comeback fight. For that fight card to have such a unique setting it sure fell short of expectations for boxing fans.
The face of boxing, Canelo Alvarez had a chance to save the weekend as he put his undisputed super middleweight championship on the line against William Skull and his IBF super middleweight championship belt. The same belt that Canelo vacated last year. That fight was a dance off and a complete snooze fest. Records were broken but not good records. Canelo vs. Skull set the CompuBox records for the fewest combined punches thrown in a 12 round contest.
The pound for pound king to save the weekend?
Last fight card was from Naoyo Inoue fighting against Ramon Cardenas. That fight got interesting real fast as Cardenas dropped Inoue in the second round. There’s something about round two last weekend. Inoue got right back up and then proceeded to beat the breaks off of Cardenas. Shot out to Inoue for understanding that he’s a star in boxing and knocked out Cardenas in the 8th round to retain his undisputed super bantamweight championship. This was indeed the only fight that delivered. As good as this fight was, it couldn’t save what was one of the most disappointing weekends in recent memory for boxing fans.
