CARDIFF, Wales — British boxing finally has the fight it has spent more than a decade waiting for. Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury have agreed to meet December 11 at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, with the blockbuster heavyweight showdown streaming live on Netflix.
The fight was officially announced Thursday by The Ring owner Turki Alalshikh and Netflix, ending years of negotiations, failed attempts and seemingly endless speculation surrounding the two biggest British heavyweights of their generation.
For years, Joshua-Fury was boxing’s ultimate “what if?” Now it’s real. Two former two-time heavyweight champions will finally share a ring in what figures to become one of the largest events in British boxing history.
Years of Talking Are Finally Over
Throughout their careers, Joshua and Fury have had numerous moments when they seemed headed toward each other. Every time, something got in the way. Titles changed hands. Negotiations collapsed. Mandatory challengers emerged. Fighters lost. Retirement entered the conversation.
Yet Joshua and Fury remained connected because British boxing fans never stopped asking the same question.
On December 11, they’ll finally get an answer. Fury recently made it clear through a series of social media videos that location wasn’t his primary concern. He wanted the fight.
Joshua, meanwhile, pushed for the long-awaited showdown to take place on British soil. Joshua got his wish. Cardiff will now host Britain’s biggest heavyweight event in decades.
The location adds another layer of history. Cardiff was also the site of Lennox Lewis’ heavyweight championship victory over Frank Bruno in 1993, one of the defining all-British heavyweight fights of its era.
More than three decades later, Joshua and Fury will bring British heavyweight boxing back to the Welsh capital on an even larger global platform. Principality Stadium has also played a significant role in Joshua’s career. Its retractable roof and enormous capacity have made it an ideal venue for major boxing events.
This time, however, Joshua won’t simply be the attraction. He’ll be sharing the stage with Fury.
