LAS VEGAS — Ryan Garcia didn’t need the five rounds he predicted. He barely needed two. Garcia delivered one of the most impressive performances of his career Saturday night, overwhelming Conor Benn and scoring a second-round technical knockout to retain his WBC welterweight championship in the main event of the Ring and Zuffa Boxing card at T-Mobile Arena.
Garcia (26-2, 21 KOs, 1 NC) dropped Benn with a devastating right hand just 45 seconds into the second round. Benn (25-2, 14 KOs) fell to his gloves and knees before answering referee Thomas Taylor’s count at seven. Garcia immediately attacked, unloading power punches as Benn attempted to survive against the ropes.
Benn slipped several shots, but Garcia’s sustained attack convinced Taylor to intervene at 1:25 of the second round. It marked the first stoppage loss of Benn’s 27-fight professional career.
Garcia’s Right Hand Changes Everything
Garcia has long been associated with his explosive left hook, but his right hand has become an increasingly dangerous weapon. “Well, I’ve always had a right hand, but I always had injuries,” Garcia said afterward. “So, this is kinda the first two fights I had no injuries on my right hand.”
Garcia demonstrated that power immediately. Less than 20 seconds into the opening round, his left hook knocked Benn off balance. Benn continued pressing forward, attempting to get inside against the taller and faster champion.
That aggression ultimately proved costly. Garcia found the opening for his right hand in the second and effectively ended the fight.
The victory represented Garcia’s first defense of the WBC championship he captured from Mario Barrios on February 21 at the same venue. Garcia also dropped Barrios with a right hand in the opening seconds of that fight before earning a unanimous decision.
Garcia has now won two consecutive fights since Rolando “Rolly” Romero upset him by unanimous decision in May 2025.
Benn’s Welterweight Return Ends Badly
Benn entered the fight after competing above the welterweight division for several years. He weighed 146 pounds Friday and described making the weight as an excruciating process.
Whatever impact the cut had, Benn didn’t absorb Garcia’s punches the way he had handled shots from larger opponents. Benn’s previous defeat came against Chris Eubank Jr. in April 2025. Against Garcia, there would be no opportunity for revenge Saturday night.
Garcia Wants Teofimo Lopez Next
Garcia didn’t waste time identifying his next target. Newly crowned WBA welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez was in the building after defeating Romero by unanimous decision on August 22.
“Teofimo, get that ass up here,” Garcia shouted. “Where you at? Unified time.” Security prevented Lopez from entering the ring as the two exchanged words.
“If he wanna get crazy, we could get crazy,” Garcia said. “It really don’t matter.” After destroying Benn in less than two rounds, Garcia has his sights set on another championship.
And if Garcia-Lopez happens next, the welterweight division may have just found its next blockbuster.
