SANTA ANA, Calif. — Bishop Gorman finally got over the Mater Dei hump. The No. 10 Gaels didn’t just beat the No. 9 Monarchs. They dominated them. Bishop Gorman defeated Mater Dei 25-8 on Friday night in a USA TODAY Sports Super 25 showdown, snapping a six-game losing streak against one of the most difficult opponents on its schedule.
The victory moves the Gaels to 4-1 on the season and gives Nevada another signature win against one of California’s premier high school football programs. For Mater Dei, it was a night of frustration.
The Monarchs entered the game 4-0 and had not lost to a team from outside California in 26 consecutive games. Bishop Gorman ended that streak in emphatic fashion. The Gaels scored on their opening possession and controlled the game from there.
Mater Dei never found an offensive rhythm, as Gorman’s defense kept the Monarchs scoreless for the first 43 minutes of the contest. While the defense handled its end of the bargain, Bishop Gorman’s offense leaned heavily on running back Corey Hinton.
Hinton delivered perhaps the biggest individual performance of the night, carrying the ball 19 times for 210 yards and two touchdowns. His production gave the Gaels the physical presence they needed to control the line of scrimmage and keep Mater Dei’s offense watching from the sideline.
Gorman Changes the Conversation
For years, the Mater Dei matchup has represented one of the biggest tests on Bishop Gorman’s national schedule. The Gaels had been unable to solve the Monarchs in their previous six meetings.
That made Friday night’s result about more than simply adding another victory to the record. It was about finally changing the narrative. Gorman traveled to Southern California and walked into one of the country’s most recognizable high school football environments. Instead of playing cautiously, the Gaels established control immediately and never allowed Mater Dei to dictate the game.
The 25-8 final score reflected that. Gorman’s defense held one of the nation’s most respected programs without a point for nearly three quarters, while Hinton repeatedly created opportunities on the ground.
Bishop Gorman entered the matchup ranked No. 10 nationally, while Mater Dei was No. 9. The rankings suggested a competitive matchup between two programs accustomed to playing on the biggest high school football stages. Instead, Gorman produced a performance that could become one of the defining moments of its season. The Gaels are now 4-1, while Mater Dei falls to 4-1.
More importantly, Gorman leaves Santa Ana with something it had been chasing for years. A win over Mater Dei. And it came in dominant fashion. For Bishop Gorman, the six-game skid is finally over. The Gaels didn’t simply get off the schneid. They made a statement.
