The controversy surrounding Ciryl Gane’s victory over Alex Pereira at UFC Freedom 250 continues to dominate headlines. Just hours after Pereira publicly accused Gane of landing illegal strikes to the back of his head during their interim heavyweight title fight. Veteran referee Herb Dean broke his silence and offered a rare public explanation regarding the fight-ending sequence.
In an unusual move for one of MMA’s most respected officials, Dean released a detailed breakdown explaining why he did not view Gane’s strikes as fouls.
The debate began after Pereira released a video criticizing both Gane and Dean following his second-round TKO loss on the White House card.
Pereira argued that several elbows and punches landed illegally behind his head. After he was knocked down by a jab from Gane. The former two-division champion suggested those strikes played a major role in the outcome of the fight and expressed frustration that Dean did not intervene.
The comments quickly gained traction throughout the MMA community, with fans and fighters dissecting video footage of the sequence.
Dean Explains the Rule
On Tuesday, Dean addressed the controversy directly. According to Dean, confusion often exists regarding what constitutes an illegal strike to the back of the head in mixed martial arts.
“The rule we’re talking about is the back of the head and that’s confusing because it’s different than boxing,” Dean explained. Rather than focusing on the entire rear portion of the head. Dean said officials are trained to focus on a much more specific target area.
“The way we enforce this rule is we focus on the nape of the neck,” Dean said.
Understanding the “Nape of the Neck” Rule
Dean explained that the protected area includes the nape of the neck, the occipital junction, and the upper spine region. Officials use a defined area rather than a broad interpretation of the back of the head.
“The nape of the neck occipital junction also covers the spine and covers a line right here with one-inch variance to either side,” Dean said while demonstrating the rule. According to Dean, strikes that land outside that restricted area are considered legal blows under MMA regulations.
“This area is a fair blow. Here is a fair blow, here is a fair blow. Here is a foul,” Dean explained.
