LAS VEGAS — Boxing icon Floyd Mayweather Jr. is once again making headlines outside the ring. According to a recent report, the IRS has filed a $7.3 million lien against the undefeated former champion for unpaid taxes related to 2018 and 2023. The lien, filed in Las Vegas, allows the federal government to seize property and assets until the debt is settled.
This isn’t the first time Mayweather has dealt with tax-related problems.
The Hall of Famer has previously faced:
- A $22.5 million lien tied to 2015 taxes
- A $7.2 million lien for 2010
Despite earning an estimated $1.15 billion over the course of his career, financial scrutiny continues to follow one of boxing’s biggest earners.
Legal Battle with Showtime Adds Fuel
The timing of the lien is notable. Just weeks earlier, Floyd Mayweather filed a lawsuit against Showtime, alleging $340 million in misappropriated funds stemming from their previous broadcast partnership. The lawsuit, combined with the IRS filing, has intensified speculation about Mayweather’s current financial standing.
At the same time, Floyd Mayweather is attempting to orchestrate a return to boxing. He’s currently linked to a highly anticipated rematch with Manny Pacquiao, scheduled for September 19 and expected to take place at Sphere with streaming on Netflix.
However, the fight remains clouded in uncertainty:
- Mayweather has suggested it could be an exhibition
- Pacquiao’s team insists it is a professional bout
- Reports indicate advance payments have already been issued
Busy Schedule, Unclear Future
Beyond the Pacquiao rematch, Mayweather is also tied to exhibition bouts against:
- Mike Tyson
- Mike Zambidis
Yet details for those events including dates, venues, and broadcast plans remain uncertain.
For a fighter who built his empire on the “Money” persona, the latest developments present a complicated narrative.
Mayweather remains:
- One of the richest fighters in history
- One of the most recognizable names in combat sports
But with tax liens, legal disputes, and unclear fight plans stacking up, questions are beginning to surface. Is this just another financial hurdle for Mayweather? Or a sign of deeper issues behind the scenes? Either way, the spotlight isn’t leaving him anytime soon.
