Manny Pacquiao is heading back to the ring this time through a new and unconventional avenue. Former eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao is set to return to boxing as part of the Team Boxing League, according to a media statement released by the league.
Pacquiao’s role with TBL will extend well beyond simply lacing up the gloves. “Manny Pacquiao will initially serve as a League Ambassador before transitioning into the ownership group,” the league said in its release. “Most notably for fans, he is set to return to the ring as a Team Captain and active fighter for the San Diego TJ’s, one of the league’s newest expansion franchises.”
Pacquiao, a former senator in the Philippines, has reportedly signed on with the league through 2029, though it remains unclear whether he plans to compete beyond that season.
A New Team, A New Chapter
Pacquiao is expected to join the San Diego TJ’s this season. Though the roster and structure of the expansion franchise have yet to be finalized. While Pacquiao owns a home in Southern California, he has no deep-rooted ties to San Diego, aside from the fact that his son now a professional fighter once competed there as an amateur.
The move could also complicate long-standing speculation about a potential rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr., Pacquiao’s longtime rival.
Their 2015 welterweight clash billed as the “Fight of the Century” ended in a unanimous decision win for Mayweather (118–110, 116–112, 116–112). While the scorecards suggested a wide margin, many observers felt the bout was far more competitive than the numbers reflected.
The event drew an estimated 4.6 million pay-per-view buys and reportedly generated more than $600 million in total revenue, including a massive live gate in Las Vegas.
IBA Angle Remains Intriguing
Pacquiao’s position as vice president of the International Boxing Association (IBA). Had fueled speculation that a future Mayweather rematch could take place under the organization’s banner. Potentially contested for an IBA title.
Founded in the early 20th century, the IBA is one of the oldest international boxing bodies, historically focused on amateur boxing. With Olympic boxing selection now overseen by a rival organization. The IBA has broadened its scope venturing into areas such as bare-knuckle boxing and selectively sanctioning IBA world titles.
Those belts are unique in that they follow professional boxing standards. While not impacting a fighter’s official professional record. A distinction that has added intrigue for aging stars and crossover events alike.
For now, Pacquiao’s focus appears firmly set on Team Boxing League and his role with the San Diego TJ’s. Whether that commitment closes the door on a Mayweather rematch or merely delays it remains one of the many unanswered questions surrounding boxing’s most enduring superstar.
