The Las Vegas Aces (7-7 ) took on the Connecticut Sun (2-13) on Wednesday night at the Michelob ULTRA Arena in a back-to-back homestand.
The Connecticut Sun were without Marina Mabrey due to a knee injury.
In the first half, the Aces got off to a hot start. Jewell Loyd pulled up with two back-to-back three-pointers. Jackie Young chimed in with a three-ball of her own to give the Aces an 8-0 lead with 7:44 left in the first quarter.
The Aces got off to a 17-point lead with 2:50 left in the quarter. At the close of the first quarter, the Aces led 21-6 with Jackie Young sinking two free-throws at the line.
In the first quarter, Jewell Loyd had 8 points and was 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Between quarters, Loyd said, “Just staying active. Be ready to move. We’re doing a great job of finding each other.”
In the second quarter, A’ja Wilson scored her 5,000th point with 4:02 left in the half. Wilson is the fastest player to reach the milestone and the second youngest player.
In the second half, the Sun made a comeback. Connecticut the Aces lead to just 4 with 8:00 minutes left. The Aces called a timeout to regroup & they continued to add to the lead.
When asked how she felt about reaching a new milestone, A’ja Wilson said, “It’s a blessing. I’ve tried my hardest to try to give the game everything and its provided for me and taken me to so many different places, I come in contact with amazing people. So I gotta just thank God for the opportunity, he’s gifted me with something that I can share with everybody.”
“I love that his light [God] can shine through me. Basketball is just a vehicle for me to be myself,” Wilson continued.
Las Vegas had four different players scoring in double-digits.
The Aces came away with the 85-59 victory of the Sun. They face the Washington Mystics on Thursday, June 26 at 7pm PT.
