The second-seeded Michigan State Spartans will face the top-seeded Auburn Tigers on Sunday in the 2025 NCAA Tournament for the South Region title and a spot in the Final Four.
Michigan State advanced with a 73-70 win over Ole Miss, while Auburn beat Michigan 78-75 in the Sweet 16.
The Spartans (30-6) are making their 15th Elite Eight appearance, aiming for their 11th Final Four and ninth under coach Tom Izzo. The Tigers (31-5) are looking to reach their second Final Four and their first since 2019.
This matchup is only the second between the schools, with Michigan State winning 92-79 in 1989.
Michigan State
Senior guard Jaden Akins is crucial to the Spartans’ scoring, recently contributing 13 points, four rebounds, and three assists in a win over Ole Miss.
He also scored 16 points in the 71-63 victory against New Mexico. In 36 games, all as a starter, he averages 12.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 27.1 minutes.
Freshman guard Jase Richardson excelled against Ole Miss with 20 points and six rebounds in 32 minutes. He had 21 points and seven rebounds in a close 77-74 loss to Wisconsin in the Big Ten Tournament.
Over 35 games, including 14 starts, he averages 12.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 25.1 minutes.
Auburn
Senior forward Johni Broome, the SEC Player of the Year, shone in Friday’s win over Michigan, achieving his 15th double-double with 22 points and 16 rebounds.
He also had 14 points and 12 rebounds in the 83-63 first-round win against Alabama State. This season, he averages 18.5 points, 2.9 assists, and 2.1 blocks over 34 games.
Senior guard Chad Baker-Mazara contributes to the scoring for the Tigers, averaging 12.3 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.6 assists across 36 games. He boasts a 45.1% field goal percentage and scored 17 points in the second-round victory against Creighton.
Izzo is 8-2 in the Elite Eight. Bruce Pearl is in for a dogfight in this one.
