Two former Raiders find new homes in free agency

The Las Vegas Raiders saw two more players head elsewhere in free agency.

According to Adam Schefter, the Kansas City Chiefs signed former Raiders quarterback Gardner Minshew to a one-year deal to back up Patrick Mahomes.

Minshew was released by the Raiders on a failed physical designation. It is unclear if the designation is related to the broken collarbone that ended Minshew’s 2024 season, or another injury altogether. Regardless of the condition, the Raiders will now see Minshew twice on the opposite sideline.

While Minshew’s short tenure with the Raiders will be looked at with little fondness, the other departure hurts much more.

According to Ian Rapoport, the New England Patriots are acquiring edge rusher K’Lavon Chaisson to a one-year, $5 million deal. Chaisson becomes the second Raider to join the Patriots this offseason after linebacker Robert Spillane signed with them at the beginning of the legal tampering period.

Despite starting the 2024 season as a practice squad body, Chaisson was a revelation for the Raiders as injuries threatened to weaken the defensive line.

In 15 games (four starts) with the Raiders, Chaisson produced a career-high five sacks. For the first time in his NFL career, Chaisson showcased the potential that made him a first-round pick in 2020. The Patriots clearly saw something they liked in Chaisson, resulting in his signing.

Free agency continues to see the Raiders roster undergo serious turnover, with Minshew and Chaisson the latest to ship out.
