On Saturday afternoon, WNBA legend, Sheryl Swoopes welcomed Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson into the Nike signature shoe family.
Swoopes started the by saying, “So ya’ll can record this, you cannot record it.”
Swoopes continued, “The biggest thing I want everybody to hear me say right now, is that it’s about f***ing time. You can bleep that out if you want. But it is.”
The small crowd there agreed with the legend.
A’ja Wilson stood alongside Swoopes as she continued to detail the importance of not only her moment with Nike but the importance of what Wilson has been able to achieve not only on the court, but during her time with Nike.
“I feel so lucky to be a part of the Nike basketball family for more than 30 years now. I’d love to see how brand continues to champion women’s basketball and athletes who play it,” Swoopes expressed.
Sheryl Swoopes then becomes emotional, Wilson leans over to console her.
Swoopes continued, “This moment today, is not just about A’ja Wilson, this moment is not about what Sheryl Swoopes did, this moment is so much bigger than the two of us. I said back in 1997, when I got my first signature shoe. Nike didn’t even have a women’s sports marketing target and look where we are, today in this moment.”
This moment is indeed important to not just the overall development of the WNBA, but to the overall visibility of women’s sports in general.
Let’s not wait another 30 years to give female athletes their flowers.
