Nobody said it was going to be easy this season. Only one team have ever accomplished a three peat. Yes we saw how the Las Vegas Aces were the odds on favorite in the preseason before any games were even played. Repeating with the same exact roster seemed to be a no brainer to select the Aces as the team to beat going into the 2024 season. This was BetMGM opening line in the preseason.
- Aces +115
- Liberty +250
- Fever +2500
- Lynx +5000

But things don’t always go according to plan as before the season started. Future 1st ballot Hall of Famer Candance Parker retires which was a big hit to their front court depth. Most importantly her leadership is what’s sorely missed and is irreplaceable. It didn’t stop there, the player that makes everything gel was rehabbing a foot injury. The absence of Chelsea Gray was clearly an issue for the Aces. The Aces had to rely on younger players to help fill that void at the guard position. It just didn’t really workout and the team was clear out of sync. They didn’t look like a team that could pull off a three peat.
Return of the Gray
Also the Aces matched their loss total of 6 games only a month after the season started. After missing the first 12 games, Chelsea Gray makes her return to the court. Without a doubt Gray’s addition re-energized the Aces as they went on a 10-2 run before the Olympic break. Things seemed to be getting back on track as the team started to look like the championship favorite that most picked. Following another successful defense of the gold medal at the Olympics in Paris. The season resumed and opposing teams have zeroed in on the Aces as they have lost 4 out their last 6 games.
Odds are shifting
With the lack of consistent play post Olympics, the championship odds for the Aces have shifted. Now there is a new championship favorite and that team is the New York Liberty.
- Liberty +130
- Aces +275
- Lynx +425
- Fever +4000
Certainly the New York Liberty are playing the best basketball in the WNBA right now. They look like a team that is on a mission to avenge their WNBA Finals loss to the Aces. But with there still being 10 games left to play before playoffs start. The Aces main concern is to established some consistency heading into the playoffs. They know what it takes to win championships so there’s no panic at this time with a team full of veterans with multiple rings.
Three peats are very rare in professional sports. It’s only been done once in the WNBA and that was by the Houston Comets who won the first 4 WNBA Championships(1997-2000). These last two games are going to be very important for the Aces. If they can get things back in gear then everyone else needs to be concerned that the most talent team in the WNBA is clicking right in time to defend their championship.
