The Chicago White Sox (27-87) are gearing up to face the Oakland Athletics (46-67) in an upcoming American League showdown at Oakland Coliseum.

The series opener will feature rookie right-hander Jonathan Cannon starting for the White Sox, while veteran righty Ross Stripling will take the mound for the Athletics. Oakland enters the game as the betting favorite.

Chicago White Sox

The Chicago White Sox are enduring a tough 2021 season. They are currently at the bottom of the AL Central and trailing by 41.5 games.

Their offense has been particularly ineffective, ranking last in the league with a team OPS of .620 and an average of just 3.09 runs per game.

First baseman Andrew Vaughn is struggling with a .235/.291/.391 slash line and 13 home runs. The team is looking to avoid the longest losing streak in MLB history and hopes some players will step up.

On the pitching side, rookie right-hander Jonathan Cannon has shown promise in his 13 starts, posting a 1-5 record, a 4.11 ERA, and a 1.27 WHIP. Chicago ranks 30th in power rankings, 30th in offense, 29th in defense, and holds a 27-88 record this season.

Oakland Athletics

The Oakland Athletics have been struggling this season. They are currently at the bottom of the AL West standings and 17.0 games out of a playoff spot.

Despite showing some offensive strength with a .231/.301/.399 slash line and 146 home runs, the team has struggled to translate that into wins.

Designated hitter Brent Rooker has been a standout performer, boasting a .956 OPS and 28 home runs. Veteran right-hander Ross Stripling has had a difficult season, with a 2-10 record, a 5.64 ERA, and a .313 opposing batting average.

Overall, the Athletics have a power ranking of 9 and are ranked #25 for offense, holding a record of 47-67. In their last three matchups, Chicago went 1-2 against Oakland.

White Sox-A’s Best Bet

Considering the challenges Jonathan Cannon and Ross Stripling have encountered on the mound this season, Stripling’s experience could provide key insights when facing the Chicago lineup.

Since the All-Star break, the White Sox have struggled with a .563 team OPS in 16 games, while the Athletics have excelled, tying for sixth place with a .787 team OPS in their 15 second-half games.

It seems advisable to lean towards the Oakland Athletics to secure a victory.

Take the A’s on the moneyline in this one.
