Rolando “Rolly” Romero is set to return to the ring after a 15-month absence and he’ll do so against one of boxing’s biggest names. According to The Ring, Romero will make the first defense of his WBA welterweight championship against former two-division world champion Teofimo Lopez on Aug. 22 in a matchup that could reshape the 147-pound division.
The bout gives Lopez another opportunity to make history while offering Romero the chance to prove his championship reign is no fluke. Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) has not fought since scoring one of the biggest upsets of 2025 when he defeated Ryan Garcia by unanimous decision to capture the WBA welterweight title.
Initially, Romero was expected to take a tune up fight for his first title defense. Instead, he’ll jump directly into a high profile championship clash against one of boxing’s most accomplished former titleholders.
The victory over Garcia transformed Romero into one of the division’s biggest attractions, and now he faces another elite opponent in his first appearance since that career defining win.
Lopez Chases Third Division World Title
Teofimo Lopez (22-2, 13 KOs) enters the fight looking to become a three division world champion. The former unified lightweight champion and former Ring and WBO junior welterweight champion last fought in January, when he lost his 140-pound titles to Shakur Stevenson.
Since moving to junior welterweight in 2022, Lopez made seven appearances at 140 pounds before deciding to move up once again. Earlier this week, his manager Keith Connolly hinted that a major announcement was imminent. Now boxing fans know why.
The matchup represents a significant crossroads for both fighters. For Romero, it’s an opportunity to silence critics who questioned whether his victory over Ryan Garcia was a one-off performance.
For Lopez, it’s another chance to cement his legacy by adding a world title in a third weight class. Should Lopez pull off the victory, he would join an exclusive group of fighters to win championships across three divisions.
Welterweight Division Continues to Heat Up
The welterweight landscape has undergone major changes over the past year. Ryan Garcia rebounded from his loss to Romero by capturing the WBC welterweight championship, while Romero now prepares to defend the WBA title against one of the sport’s biggest stars.
With world champions continuing to emerge and elite fighters moving between weight classes, the 147-pound division remains one of boxing’s deepest and most compelling. On August 22, Romero and Lopez will add another major chapter to that story, with championship gold and boxing history both on the line.
