Las Vegas Lights FC finally got its first win of the 2026 season, and it came the hard way. The Lights beat Monterey Bay FC 1-0 Saturday night at Cashman Field in the home opener, with Johnny Rodriguez converting a second-half penalty after both teams missed from the spot early.
Las Vegas improved to 1-1-2 and 4 points. Monterey Bay dropped to 0-1-3 and 1 point.
Penalties everywhere, goals nowhere
The match started with chaos and ended with control. Monterey Bay’s Sebastian Lletget missed a penalty in the 11th minute, and Las Vegas’ Manuel Arteaga missed one four minutes later. Cashman had barely settled before both sides had blown a golden chance, and the game had a strange edge the rest of the first half.
Even so, Las Vegas kept creating. The Lights finished with 16 shots and seven on goal, while Monterey Bay managed four shots and put just one on frame.
Rodriguez keeps his nerve
The difference finally arrived right after halftime. Rodriguez stepped up and buried a penalty in the 49th minute, putting the Lights ahead 1-0 in a match that had begged for a clean finish.
From there, Las Vegas played like a team that understood the assignment. It protected the middle, forced Monterey Bay wide and kept the ball enough to make the visitors chase.
Cashman tilts to the Lights
The Lights did not just win. They looked like the sharper side all night. Las Vegas held a slight edge in possession at 51.7% and pushed the match forward, while Monterey Bay leaned on defending and its goalkeeper’s work. Monterey Bay keeper Fernando Delgado finished with six saves, which kept it close until the final whistle.
The visitors also racked up four yellow cards, while Las Vegas took one.
Three points, finally
The Lights close the opening month with something they can build on: a clean sheet, a home opener win and a clear attacking edge. The finishing still needs tightening, especially after a missed penalty, but Las Vegas created enough to deserve the result.
Attendance was 3,708 at Cashman Field.
Standings snapshot
The Lights’ home opener win moved Las Vegas to ninth in the Western Conference at 1-1-2 (4 points) through four matches. Orange County sits first in the West at 8 points, with El Paso right behind in second at 7 points.
