LAS VEGAS — The Vegas Golden Knights have made a stunning late-season move. General Manager Kelly McCrimmon announced Sunday that head coach Bruce Cassidy has been relieved of his duties, with veteran bench boss John Tortorella immediately taking over.
Cassidy’s departure marks the end of a successful chapter in franchise history. During his four seasons in Vegas, he led the organization to its ultimate goal: A Stanley Cup championship in 2023
“We thank Bruce Cassidy for his dedication… bringing a Stanley Cup to Vegas,” McCrimmon said. “He will forever be remembered with the utmost regard.”
Despite that success, the organization felt a change was necessary as the 2025–26 season enters its critical stretch. Vegas is turning to experience and intensity.
Tortorella brings:
- 23 seasons as an NHL head coach
- 770 career wins (second-most among U.S.-born coaches)
- Stanley Cup champion (2004) with the Tampa Bay Lightning
- Two-time Jack Adams Award winner
“We believe that a change is necessary… Tortorella’s guidance will be a great asset at this pivotal point,” McCrimmon said.
A Proven and Demanding Coach
Tortorella’s resume spans multiple franchises, including:
- Philadelphia Flyers (2022–25)
- Columbus Blue Jackets (2015–21)
- New York Rangers (multiple stints)
- Vancouver Canucks (2013–14)
He has coached:
- 1,620 NHL games (6th all-time)
- 12 playoff runs
- Multiple conference final appearances
Known for his demanding style and defensive structure, Tortorella represents a sharp philosophical shift from Cassidy.
International Success Adds to Resume
Tortorella recently added another accolade: Assistant coach for Team USA’s gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan
He also has experience with:
- 2010 Olympic silver medal team
- 2016 World Cup of Hockey (head coach)
The Golden Knights didn’t make this move lightly. Firing a Stanley Cup-winning coach is rare. But bringing in John Tortorella sends a clear message:Vegas isn’t satisfied, they’re chasing another title.
