LAS VEGAS — A high-stakes all-Mexican clash is set for Cinco de Mayo weekend, as Armando Resendiz faces Jaime Munguia on May 2 at T-Mobile Arena. The bout will serve as a key supporting fight on a stacked card headlined by David Benavidez vs. Gilberto Ramirez one of the biggest boxing weekends of the year. Resendiz (16-2, 11 KOs) enters the fight coming off a career-defining upset over Caleb Plant a split-decision victory that earned The Ring’s 2025 Upset of the Year honors.

The win catapulted Resendiz into the upper tier of the division and positioned him for the biggest opportunity of his career. According to trainer Manny Robles. That victory changed everything. “The win just took him to another level,” Robles said. “We’re going to prove on May 2 how much he’s improved.”

Munguia Returns Under Scrutiny

Munguia (45-2, 35 KOs) also enters off a win a unanimous decision victory in his rematch with Bruno Surace. However, that result came with controversy.

Munguia tested positive for a banned substance following the fight. Though it was later ruled to be caused by accidental contamination involving Pregnenolone a legal, non-banned substance. Still, questions remain. Robles made it clear that his team is pushing for enhanced testing measures ahead of the bout.

“Absolutely we’re worried,” Robles said. “That’s the first thing I asked… to make sure there is VADA testing involved.”

Calls for VADA Testing Highlight Tension

The request for VADA (Voluntary Anti-Doping Association) testing adds another layer to an already compelling matchup. Robles didn’t hide his frustration regarding the handling of Munguia’s previous test.

“He tested positive. How can they come in and say he’s not at fault?” Robles said. “When you’re wrong, you’re wrong.” That tension could carry into fight week and adds intrigue to a bout already fueled by national pride and divisional stakes.
