Jaime Munguia Steps In as Jermall Charlo Withdraws from WBA Title Fight

A major shake-up has hit one of boxing’s biggest upcoming cards in Las Vegas. Jermall Charlo has been withdrawn from his scheduled WBA super middleweight title challenge against Armando Resendiz on May 2, with Jaime Munguia stepping in as his replacement, according to sources.

The updated matchup Jaime Munguia vs. Resendiz will now serve as the co-main event to the highly anticipated showdown between Gilberto Ramirez and David Benavidez. The card, promoted under the Premier Boxing Champions banner, will stream via Prime Video from T-Mobile Arena adding yet another layer of intrigue to an already stacked night.

Charlo’s Return Delayed Again

Charlo’s withdrawal comes just as he appeared to be regaining momentum. After an 18-month layoff, he returned to stop Thomas LaManna and position himself for a title shot. The planned bout with Resendiz was expected to be his first opportunity to reclaim championship relevance at 168 pounds. Now, those plans are once again on hold with no official reason given for his removal.

For Resendiz (27), this fight represents more than just a title defense it’s about validation. He shocked the boxing world last May by defeating former champion Caleb Plant to capture the interim WBA title, a victory that was initially viewed as a massive upset. That win ultimately elevated him to full champion status following the retirement of Terence Crawford in December. Now, Resendiz faces another high-profile opponent in Jaime Munguia with a chance to prove his rise is no accident.

For Jaime Munguia, this is a second chance at a fight that previously fell apart during negotiations. Now stepping in on short notice, Munguia finds himself in a title fight on a major pay-per-view stage, with the opportunity to capture a belt and reassert himself among the elite at super middleweight.

Stakes Continue to Rise in Vegas

The reshuffled co-main event only adds more intrigue to what is shaping up to be one of the most important boxing cards of the year in Las Vegas.

With:

  • Benavidez chasing multi-division glory

  • Ramirez defending his unified cruiserweight titles

  • And now Munguia stepping into a championship opportunity

May 2 at T-Mobile Arena is quickly becoming a defining night across multiple divisions.
