On a historic night in San Juan, Xander Zayas delivered the most complete performance of his young career. Fighting in his hometown for the first time as a professional, Zayas outboxed Abass Baraou to earn a split-decision victory and capture the unified WBA and WBO junior middleweight titles Saturday night at Coliseo de Puerto Rico.

With the win, the 23-year-old Zayas becomes boxing’s youngest unified world champion, further cementing his status as one of the sport’s fastest-rising stars.

A Perfect Homecoming Start

From the opening bell, Zayas (23-0, 13 KOs) fought with purpose and poise. His advantages in footwork, speed, and ring IQ were immediately apparent, as he consistently kept Baraou (17-2, 9 KOs) turning, resetting, and reacting to cleaner, sharper punches.

Whenever Baraou attempted to cut off the ring, Zayas calmly pivoted away, slipping back to center ring where he controlled the tempo and dictated distance.

The pre-fight narrative suggested Baraou’s best chance for an upset would come if his pressure wore Zayas down in the second half. While the German contender showed flashes in rounds five and seven, none were decisive enough to clearly swing the fight in his favor.

Zayas’ composure never wavered. Even when his back brushed the ropes, he escaped cleanly and reset the action on his terms.

Championship Composure Late

The intensity rose in the ninth round as both fighters exchanged combinations during a spirited opening minute. Sensing the shift, Zayas quickly returned to disciplined boxing, denying Baraou sustained access to the inside.

In the 10th, Zayas further tightened his grip on the fight, once again showcasing smooth movement and punch placement to keep control.

Knowing he needed something dramatic, Baraou emptied the tank in the final round, pressing forward relentlessly. Zayas, well aware of his lead, chose to engage and the bout closed at a fever pitch with both fighters trading until the final bell.

A Star Takes Center Stage

When the scores were read, the moment belonged to Zayas. In front of a roaring Puerto Rican crowd, he not only defended his unbeaten record but also claimed two major world titles achieving something no one his age has done before.

At just 23 years old, Xander Zayas isn’t just a champion. He’s now the young standard-bearer of the junior middleweight division, and after a triumphant night in San Juan, the rest of boxing will be forced to catch up.
