UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria released a detailed statement Monday morning alleging he is the target of an attempted extortion scheme involving what he describes as “entirely unfounded” accusations of domestic abuse.

Topuria, who recently withdrew from fighting in the first quarter of 2026 to address what he called “a difficult moment in my personal life,” said the allegations were accompanied by financial demands and threats to publicly release the claims if he did not comply.

Topuria: “Silence… Allows False Narratives to Take Hold”

In a lengthy message posted to social media, Topuria explained that he initially chose not to address the matter publicly in order to protect his children. However, he said the pressure and misinformation surrounding the situation forced him to speak.

“My initial decision to remain silent was made solely to protect my children,” Topuria wrote. “However, I have come to understand that silence, under these circumstances, does not protect the truth it allows false narratives to take hold.”

Topuria said he will not be making any additional public statements while legal proceedings unfold.

Evidence Submitted to Judicial Authorities

Topuria stated that he has already provided documentation to authorities to support his claim of extortion. According to the champion, the evidence includes:

  • Audio recordings

  • Written communications

  • Witness statements

  • Video material

He said that legal action is being pursued for attempted extortion, falsification of evidence, misappropriation of funds and property, and multiple threats. “Those who know me can attest that I have never engaged in violence of any kind,” he added. “My life and career have always been guided by discipline, respect, and integrity.”

Topuria emphasized that, for the sake of his children and the legal process, he will not comment further and asked the public and media to refrain from speculation.

“The truth does not require volume it requires facts,” he concluded.

Topuria’s Career on Pause, UFC Creates Interim Belt

Topuria (17-0) has been one of the UFC’s fastest-rising stars over the past five years, winning nine straight fights inside the octagon and capturing both the featherweight and lightweight championships. His title run includes knockout victories over Max Holloway, Alexander Volkanovski, and Charles Oliveira.

With the lightweight champion stepping away temporarily, the UFC has scheduled an interim title fight between Justin Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett for Jan. 24 in Las Vegas.
