Saturday night in Paris, Nassourdine Imavov is stepping into the Octagon not just to defend home turf but to make a definitive case for UFC middleweight gold. Ranked No. 2 in the division, Imavov believes a win over Brazil’s Caio Borralho cements his spot as the rightful next challenger to champion Khamzat Chimaev.
The Road to Contention
The French contender already has one of the division’s signature victories of the past year his knockout of Israel Adesanya in February. That moment looked like it had punched his ticket to a title fight, but instead, Chimaev leapfrogged into the spotlight by dismantling Dricus Du Plessis. Now, UFC brass appears to be framing both Imavov–Borralho and the UFC Vancouver headliner between Reinier De Ridder and Anthony Hernandez as semifinal matchups in an informal tournament.
Imavov’s Response
Imavov isn’t rattled by Dana White’s hint of multiple contenders vying for one shot. He insists his résumé is stronger than anyone else’s.
“I’m just different from any other guys in the weight class… Right now I’m focusing on this fight, but after this fight, we’re going to concentrate on the Khamzat and prepare everything well. But I’m just different from anyone in the weight class.”
“No, I’m not disappointed. I know what I’m worth. After this fight, I’m going to be the number one contender. What I’ve done in this weight class, no one else has done. Who knocked out Israel Adesanya like that? Who did? No one.”
He also dismisses Borralho’s place in the title picture altogether. After more than a year out, the Brazilian accused Imavov of ducking him, a claim the Frenchman brushed aside.
“Why does he deserve it? For what reason? What has he done? It’s been a year since he fought. He doesn’t deserve it more than De Ridder.”
If Imavov delivers another highlight-reel performance, the UFC may find it hard to deny him. For now, he’s laser-focused on Saturday night. But the message is clear: in his eyes, there are no semifinals. Beat Borralho in Paris, and it’s Khamzat Chimaev next.
