The A’s (41-58) travel to Progressive Field to take on the Cleveland Guardians (47-49) in game two of their weekend series.
Cleveland claimed the opener 8-6, highlighted by Johnathan Rodríguez’s first major league home run, and will aim to build on that post-All-Star break momentum.
Given Luis Severino’s struggles on the road and the Guardians’ recent offensive surge, this matchup offers intriguing opportunities for bettors to consider.
Pitching Matchup
Luis Severino (2-11, 5.16 ERA) continues to struggle for the A’s, posting an abysmal record and a bloated ERA over 113.1 innings.
His 81:38 strikeout-to-walk ratio points to diminished swing-and-miss ability, and he’s allowed three or more earned runs in eight straight starts. Severino’s road ERA is an alarming 5.78, and a 1.41 WHIP highlights his ongoing issues with runners on base.
For the Guardians, Logan Taylor Allen (6-7, 4.00 ERA) has been more reliable, with a respectable ERA over 90 innings and a solid 70:38 K:BB ratio.
He’s especially effective at Progressive Field, holding a 3.47 ERA at home and limiting left-handed hitters to a .217 average. Allen is 3-1 with a 3.21 ERA in his last five home starts, giving Cleveland a clear advantage.
While neither pitcher has been dominant, Allen’s consistency and strong home performances make the Guardians the better bet, especially with Severino’s continued struggles and Cleveland’s offense coming off an eight-run outburst in the series opener.
The Guardians have rebounded from a 10-game skid, winning seven of their last eight. Despite Steven Kwan’s absence, Johnathan Rodríguez and others have stepped up.
Given Severino’s road struggles and Allen’s reliability, Cleveland is poised to build on Friday’s win and notch another victory against the A’s. I’m going to take the Guardians to cover the run line for plus-money in this one.
