As Thursday’s game approaches, the Las Vegas Aces and Washington Mystics are tied for the last playoff spot in the WNBA.
At 9-10, the Aces had hoped to stay competitive, but their season has taken a downturn with a struggling offense and underwhelming defense. Their chances for a successful conclusion seem slim.
Meanwhile, the Mystics have exceeded initial expectations thanks to a rookie All-Star duo making an impact.
This matchup is crucial, with both teams three games ahead of the Chicago Sky and Los Angeles Sparks. As the race for playoff positions tightens, the pressure mounts.
Washington’s home record is 6-3 in 2025, and it has proven to be a reliable bet, posting a 10-9 record against the spread. In contrast, the Aces struggle with a 7-12 record against the spread, placing them among the lowest in the WNBA.
A’ja Wilson significantly contributes to Las Vegas on both offense and defense, making it difficult to envision how the Aces will manage against the formidable frontcourt of Kiki Iriafen and Shakira Austin, especially without one of the league’s top interior defenders.
Wilson’s status adds to the concerns. The three-time MVP is out after suffering a wrist injury, which would greatly hinder Las Vegas.
Even if Wilson was in the lineup, I have doubts about the Aces.
Therefore, I’m favoring the Mystics, whose balanced offensive attack with players like Brittney Sykes, Sonia Citron, and Kiki Iriafen could prove too challenging for the Aces to handle.
