The Kansas City Royals (38-38) take on the San Diego Padres (40-35) in the second game of their three-game series on Sunday at Petco Park, starting at 4:15 p.m. PST

The Royals lead the season series 1-0 and recently snapped a six-game losing streak with four straight wins, including a 6-5 victory in the series opener.

Salvador Perez delivered a key eighth-inning single, and both Jonathan India and Bobby Witt Jr. hit home runs. Lucas Erceg earned the win, while Carlos Estevez recorded his MLB-leading 22nd save.

Meanwhile, the Padres have lost seven of their last nine games. Fernando Tatis Jr. returned to the lineup but went 0-for-4, while Xander Bogaerts had three hits, tying a Padres record with hits in eight straight at-bats.

Manny Machado hit his 12th home run in the ninth, but San Diego couldn’t complete the comeback.

Noah Cameron (2-2, 1.91 ERA) will make his eighth start, showcasing a 0.90 WHIP with 2.6 BB/9 and 6.8 K/9 over 42 1/3 innings. In his last outing, he went five innings with no earned runs but took a no-decision in a 3-2 loss to the A’s.

Remarkably, he’s allowed no more than one run in 6 of his seven starts this season and will face the Padres for the first time. His 2025 road stats show a stellar 0.47 ERA across 19 innings.

Dylan Cease (2-6, 4.69 ERA) makes his 16th start with a 1.33 WHIP, 3.3 BB/9, and 11.7 K/9 over 80 2/3 innings. In his last game, he lost after giving up six earned runs over five innings.

Before that, he had 11 consecutive starts, allowing three or fewer runs. Against the Royals, he’s 5-4 with a 3.50 ERA. This season at home, his ERA is 3.00 in 7 starts.

The Royals are currently on a hot streak, winning four in a row and five straight on the road.

They’ve scored six runs in three of their last four games. Meanwhile, Cease is coming off a tough start, and the Padres have dropped 3 of his previous four starts.
