The Winnipeg Jets have lost eight straight games against the Vegas Golden Knights. This Thursday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas presents another chance for the Jets to shake off their struggles in Sin City.
Their challenge is heightened because the Golden Knights have won eight of their last ten games at home. No team has dominated the Jets like the Golden Knights, with eight consecutive wins over the previous three seasons.
However, there are encouraging signs that this year’s Jets may break free from their Sin City woes. Both earlier encounters this season were decided by a single goal, including a heartbreaking 3-2 loss in December.
The Jets had a 2-1 lead in the dying moments of the third period, only to see it slip away with Victor Olofsson’s last-minute equalizer. Ivan Barbashev then struck the decisive blow in overtime.
Thursday’s matchup features opponents considered favorites to win the Stanley Cup, and it’s easy to see why, given their play styles. The teams are so evenly matched in terms of skill, which was clear during their first two games.
As the powerhouses of the Western Conference gear up for what lies ahead, I anticipate this game will feel more like a playoff preview.
This should lead to a closely contested game, with Winnipeg relying on its defensive strengths and leaving the rest to Connor Hellebuyck, who is in the running for the Hart Trophy.
Hellebuyck was instrumental in the Jets’ recent 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals, and I expect him to deliver another outstanding performance.
With the Dallas Stars putting pressure on the Jets for superiority in the Central Division, the pressure is on them to finish the season strong.
