In the third matchup of a four-game series in the American League West, the Athletics are set to face the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park on Saturday night.

The Athletics hold third place in the AL West with a record of 0-1, and they will send right-hander Osvaldo Bido to the mound. Meanwhile, the Mariners are positioned second in the division with a 1-0 record and will start young right-hander Bryce Miller.

The Athletics are eager to progress as they continue investing in their roster. However, their lineup has faced challenges, posting a team OPS of just .452, the lowest in Major League Baseball. They struggled at the plate, going 3-for-32, a mere .094 batting average.

First baseman Tyler Soderstrom had a strong performance, going 2-for-4 with two solo home runs to kick off the season. For the Athletics to succeed in the 2025 season, the rest of the lineup must step up and demonstrate their hitting capabilities.

Right-hander Osvaldo Bido will be on the mound for the Athletics, aiming for a strong performance after finishing the 2024 season with a 5-3 record, a 3.41 ERA, and a 1.09 WHIP over 63.1 innings.

He has proven difficult for hitters, allowing only three home runs—an average of less than one every 21 innings—and posting a .192 opposing batting average.

Bido faced the Mariners once last season, pitching 5.1 innings and giving up four runs on six hits, with one walk and four strikeouts, resulting in a no-decision.

Conversely, the Seattle Mariners have struggled offensively and need key players to improve their performance. They rank 11th in the majors with a .761 OPS, showing patience at the plate with eight walks against nine strikeouts.

Third baseman Jorge Polanco has been a standout, going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. The Mariners must enhance their batting to support their solid pitching staff.

The young right-hander Bryce Miller is starting for the Mariners, who posted a 12-8 record last season with a 2.94 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP across 180.1 innings. His control has been impressive, reflected in his 45:171 walk-to-strikeout ratio.

Miller faced the Athletics once last season but suffered a loss after pitching six innings, allowing two runs on five hits, with two walks and nine strikeouts.

Although the Athletics have had some positive moments, there is a noticeable gap between these two teams. Bryce Miller has demonstrated stronger pitching skills, while Osvaldo Bido has faced challenges on the mound.

The teams are performing at different levels, particularly in their ability to reach base. The Athletics sit at the bottom with a dismal .167 team on-base percentage, whereas the Mariners rank ninth in the league with a solid .341.

Given the Mariners’ overall advantages, they can capitalize and secure a victory in this matchup.
