We’ve reached the Sweet 16 of the 2025 NCAA Tournament, and in one of the West Region semifinals, there will be an exciting Big Ten versus SEC showdown.
The top-seeded Florida Gators will face off against the fourth-seeded Maryland Terrapins this Thursday in San Francisco.
Both teams are eager to break their Final Four droughts—Florida hasn’t reached the national semifinals since 2014, while Maryland’s last appearance was in 2002.
The Gators’ record is 32-4 this season, and they advanced to the Sweet 16 after victories over Norfolk State and UConn.
Meanwhile, the Terps are 27-8, having secured their spot by defeating Grand Canyon and Colorado State in their March Madness run
According to KenPom, Florida’s offense is the top-ranked in efficiency, averaging 128.8 points per 100 possessions. However, they faced some challenges against UConn despite the Huskies’ 81st-ranked defense.
Now, Florida will encounter Maryland, which has the 6th-ranked defense and is known for neutralizing potent offenses throughout the BIG10. Given Florida’s struggles at the free-throw line, covering the 6.5-point spread will be tough.
While Florida has performed well in rebounding, Maryland has the advantage in physical play, thanks to their formidable forwards.
Additionally, Florida tends to depend on their shooting from beyond the arc and mid-range, but the Terrapin guards’ strong defensive presence will complicate this.
Maryland restricts opponents to a field goal percentage of 41.3% and 30.2% from three-point range. Therefore, the real value lies in taking Maryland and the points.
