In tonight’s NHL schedule, the Colorado Avalanche will welcome the Chicago Blackhawks for a Central Division matchup. The odds favor Colorado at -550, with a total set at 6.5.

Chicago has emerged victorious in their last two encounters with the Avalanche. Although I’m not confident they’ll secure a third consecutive win, I think the underdog can keep the game competitive.

Chicago

The Chicago Blackhawks kicked off their rebuild on a high note by acquiring Connor Bedard, but their performance has stagnated since then.

They sit near the bottom of the NHL standings with a troubling 7-20-5 record on the road.

While the Blackhawks struggle offensively, ranking 25th in the league with an average of 2.77 goals per game, their goaltending woes, evident in a 3.47 goals-against average, highlight the need for significant improvements before they can be deemed competitive.

Despite a rocky beginning to the season, Bedard is showcasing his potential with 52 points in 64 games. However, with only Teuvo Teravainen providing notable support, he is surrounded by a lackluster roster.

In their most recent outing, the Blackhawks suffered a close defeat to the Nashville Predators. Arvid Soderblom kept the game competitive with 38 saves, but with Chicago managing just two goals, they ultimately lost 3-2.

Colorado

The Colorado Avalanche primarily occupied the first Wild Card position in the Western Conference during the 2024/25 season.

However, after securing nine victories in their last 12 games, they’ve climbed to third place in the Central Division, trailing the Dallas Stars by just six points for the second spot.

With these recent successes, the Avalanche have elevated their scoring rate to an impressive 3.36 goals per game, placing them fifth overall in the NHL.

Although their goaltending stands at 17th in the league, their roster’s talent might just make them a strong contender for the Western Conference title this season.

In 64 games played, Nathan MacKinnon became the league’s first player to surpass the 100-point mark, while his dynamic partner, Cale Makar, has tallied 75 points in the same number of games.

This formidable duo has the potential to lead the team deep into the playoffs.

In their latest outing, the Avalanche secured a thrilling 7-4 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs, highlighted by Valeri Nichushkin’s hat trick and contributions from 14 different players, overcoming a challenging three-goal deficit in the first period.

Blackhawks-Avs Best Bet

The Colorado Avalanche clearly have the upper hand, but the odds seem skewed in this matchup, with the Chicago Blackhawks at +160 to lose by one goal or less.

There are reasons to believe Chicago will stay competitive. They’ve been playing better in March, covering the +1.5 spread in their last five games.

Newly acquired goaltender Spencer Knight has also made a positive impact, winning both of his first games with a .951 save percentage and a 1.95 goals against average.

Best Bet: Blackhawks +1.5 goals at +160 odds
