The Las Vegas Raiders, who had an 8-9 record in 2023, will kick off the 2024 regular season against the Los Angeles Chargers, who finished 5-12.

The Chargers are favored by three points over the Raiders, with the over/under set at 41.5 points.

Las Vegas Raiders

Antonio Pierce has taken over as the Las Vegas Raiders’ full-time head coach, and the quarterback situation seems uncertain. Gardner Minshew is likely to lead the team while they search for a long-term solution at the position.

Nevertheless, I believe that Minshew and his team will be able to stay competitive and score enough points against the current depleted Chargers defense.

The Chargers’ secondary is uncertain, so there is cautious optimism about Minshew’s potential to shine as the quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Raiders’ defense, especially their secondary, improved last year, making them the stronger of the two defenses.

This opening game of the season between the Raiders and the Chargers, known for their history of struggling in close games, is an AFC West showdown.

Los Angeles Chargers

Last season, the Los Angeles Chargers defense performed poorly, ranking 24th in EPA per play and struggling in the secondary, ranking 26th in EPA per dropback.

As they approach Week 1, they are dealing with some injury concerns, as cornerback Asante Samuel and depth player Tarheeb Still are on the injury report.

Additionally, there are worries about the Chargers’ defensive line, as Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack may not be performing at their best.

The Chargers have also lost key offensive players, such as Austin Ekeler, Keenan Allen, and Mike Williams, leaving Justin Herbert with fewer top targets.

Raiders-Chargers Best Bet

Harbaugh’s arrival suggests a stronger focus on defense. During his tenure with the San Francisco 49ers, they consistently ranked in the top 10 for fewest points allowed, while their offense frequently ranked in the top 12 for scoring.

On the other hand, the Raiders had a strong defense, ranking seventh in points allowed per game, but their scoring offense ranked only 23rd last year, indicating a potential for the game to trend toward the Under.

However, there’s uncertainty about how quickly the Chargers will adapt to Harbaugh’s defensive strategies.

The Chargers also have a revamped offense, incorporating new players such as Alt, Ladd McConkey, Gus Edwards, and J.K. Dobbins.

Las Vegas closed out the 2023 season by scoring at least 20 points in their last four games, including a 63-point performance.

Even though the potential for a lot of points is significant, I anticipate this game being dominated by defense and a focus on running the football.

The best bet for this game is the Under. I’m seeing it at 41-42 points, depending on the sportsbook, but everything about this tells me this will be a tough, grind-it-out game.

I would expect a final score of 20-17.
