Brock Bowers Could Return Against Chargers, But Raiders Face a Bigger Question

HENDERSON, Nev. — Brock Bowers might be healthy enough to play Sunday. That doesn’t necessarily mean the Las Vegas Raiders will let him.

The Raiders’ star tight end remains day-to-day after undergoing meniscus surgery less than two weeks ago, but multiple reports indicate Bowers could potentially return when Las Vegas travels to SoFi Stadium to face the Los Angeles Chargers.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported Wednesday that Bowers’ knee injury is “not overly serious” and that the Raiders believed he could have played in Week 1 if necessary.

Graziano also reported that Bowers could return against the Chargers, while emphasizing that the organization is determined to be cautious with one of the most important players on its roster.

“I believe the latest you’ll see Bowers is Week 4 against the Chiefs,” Graziano reported, “but again, it could be sooner than that.”

That timeline is significant. Week 4 would be the Raiders’ matchup against Kansas City, meaning the team appears to have a relatively firm expectation that Bowers will be back by then. The bigger question is whether Las Vegas believes he needs to wait until then.

Raiders Have Reason to Be Cautious

Sports Illustrated insider Hondo Carpenter echoed the possibility of Bowers returning this week while suggesting the decision could ultimately come down to how conservative the Raiders want to be.

“I do know they expect him back for New Orleans, but now the question is really going to be ‘are the Raiders going to be cautious?’” Carpenter said on the Las Vegas Raiders Insider podcast.

“It wouldn’t be reckless to bring him back this week. I want to make that clear. It’s being cautious.” That’s an important distinction. This isn’t necessarily a question of whether Bowers can play.

It’s whether the Raiders should play him. Bowers underwent meniscus surgery only 12 days before Sunday’s game against the Chargers. Even if the procedure was relatively minor and his recovery is progressing as expected, Las Vegas has to consider the bigger picture.

The Raiders aren’t simply trying to win Week 2. They’re trying to build a season. Bowers is too important to the team’s long-term plans to take unnecessary chances with his knee.

Bowers’ Knee History Adds Another Layer

The situation becomes even more interesting because Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer recently discussed the history of Bowers’ knees dating back to his college career at Georgia.

Breer described the issue as involving “wear and tear” and pointed out that Bowers had knee concerns coming out of Georgia before the Raiders selected him.

“That’s a wear and tear injury,” Breer said on The Rich Eisen Show. “And having him in this, I don’t want to scare anybody here because it was a trim rather than a repair, which gets him back sooner rather than later. But there was some wear and tear stuff on him coming out of Georgia.”

Breer stressed that he wasn’t sounding an alarm about Bowers’ situation. That’s an important caveat. The fact that Bowers underwent a meniscus trim rather than a repair is also relevant to his recovery timeline. A trim generally allows a player to return more quickly than a repair, which helps explain why there is already legitimate discussion about Bowers playing only days after the procedure.

But Breer’s larger point was about mileage. Bowers is still only three years into his NFL career, yet he has already accumulated significant football wear.

Week 3 Could Be the Sweet Spot

The latest reporting continues to point toward Bowers returning by Week 3 against New Orleans, even though Week 2 remains possible. That could ultimately be the compromise.

Rather than asking Bowers to return just 12 days after surgery, the Raiders could give him another week of recovery and target the Saints game. That would also give the medical staff additional time to determine whether Bowers is moving, cutting and absorbing contact without limitations.

The Raiders don’t need Bowers to prove that he’s tough. They need him healthy. There’s a long season ahead, and the Raiders have a player who is expected to be central to their offensive identity for years.
