CORONA, Calif. — In a matchup featuring two of California’s premier high school football programs, Santa Margarita escaped with a 21-20 victory over Centennial on Friday night in a game that came down to the smallest of margins.
Centennial and Santa Margarita entered the matchup looking to make an early-season statement, and neither side gave the other much room for error. The Huskies finished with 67 more total yards than the Eagles, but Santa Margarita made enough plays when it mattered to leave with the one-point victory.
For Centennial, senior quarterback Jaden Jefferson threw for 189 yards and two touchdowns while being intercepted once. One of his primary targets was fellow senior Quentin Hale, who finished with 101 receiving yards and a touchdown.
The production from Jefferson and Hale helped keep Centennial within striking distance throughout the night, but the Huskies were unable to turn their advantage in total offense into enough points on the scoreboard.
Santa Margarita Wins Battle Up Front
While Centennial found success moving the football, Santa Margarita’s performance in the trenches proved critical. Adrian Petero and Jaion Smith helped set the tone up front for the Eagles, whose ability to control key situations ultimately helped swing the game in Santa Margarita’s favor.
In a matchup this evenly contested, a handful of plays can determine the outcome. On Friday, those plays belonged to the Eagles. The loss drops Centennial to 1-1 on the season. Dating back to last year, the Huskies have now gone 1-2 since having their nine-game winning streak snapped.
Santa Margarita, meanwhile, remains perfect at 2-0, giving the Eagles an impressive start to their season and an early signature victory over one of Southern California’s perennial powers.
Mater Dei Awaits Centennial
Centennial will now have additional time to regroup before facing another heavyweight opponent. The Huskies are scheduled to take on Mater Dei on Sept. 11 at 7 p.m., presenting Centennial with another opportunity to test itself against one of the state’s elite programs.
Santa Margarita will look to keep its unbeaten start intact when the Eagles welcome Highland for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday.
For Centennial, the final score will sting, particularly after outgaining Santa Margarita. But in a matchup between two teams with championship expectations, Friday night’s 21-20 result demonstrated just how thin the margin can be between winning and losing.
