WASHINGTON, D.C. — Mother Nature has temporarily halted one of the most historic events in UFC history. UFC Freedom 250, the promotion’s unprecedented event on the South Lawn of the White House, was delayed Sunday evening due to severe weather conditions moving into the nation’s capital.
The seven-fight card was originally scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET, but a series of thunderstorms approaching from West Virginia forced UFC officials to postpone the start of the event while monitoring lightning activity in the area.
While rain and wind were expected concerns throughout the weekend, lightning has emerged as the primary obstacle.
According to information provided during the broadcast, any lightning strike detected within a six-mile radius of the White House automatically triggers a mandatory 30-minute shelter-in-place period before activities can resume.
As storms moved into the Washington, D.C. area Sunday evening, officials opted to delay the start of the card out of caution.
The temporary venue constructed on the White House grounds includes protection for the Octagon itself. But safety protocols remain in place for fighters, spectators, staff members, and government personnel in attendance.
Weather Expected to Improve
The good news for fight fans is that conditions are expected to improve later in the evening. According to the broadcast team, weather forecasts indicate that the storms should move through the area and clear by approximately 9 p.m. ET.
Officials continue to monitor conditions in real time while working alongside weather experts and emergency personnel. Once lightning concerns subside and safety requirements are satisfied, the event is expected to move forward.
