Las Vegas Lights FC could not turn set-piece pressure into goals Friday night, falling 2-0 to Oakland Roots SC at Cashman Field in USL Cup group play. Oakland scored once late in the first half and again after halftime, then managed the match from there.

The loss left the Lights at 0-1-2 with 1 point in the group. Oakland moved to 1-1-1 with 4 points. Attendance was 2,774.

One goal before the break flips the night

Las Vegas and Oakland traded stretches early, and the numbers stayed close. Oakland held a slight possession edge at 54.5% and Las Vegas matched it with shot volume, finishing with a 10-8 advantage in attempts.

However, Oakland landed the first clean blow. Jesús De Vicente scored in the 41st minute, sending the Lights into halftime chasing a goal instead of controlling the match state.

Set pieces pile up, payoff never comes

Las Vegas had chances to climb back through corners and second balls. The Lights finished with seven corners, and Oakland had six, but neither side turned those moments into the one touch that changes a match.

Oakland goalkeeper Raphael Spiegel also did his part, finishing with three saves. Las Vegas put three shots on goal, but the Roots stayed organized in front of him.

Lepley adds the cushion

Oakland doubled the lead in the 59th minute when Tucker Lepley scored to make it 2-0. From there, the Lights tried to reshuffle with a series of changes, but the equalizer never arrived, and neither did the first goal.

Oakland finished with three shots on goal, matching Las Vegas there, and it stayed disciplined enough to close it out. The Lights finished without a yellow card, while Oakland picked up three, including a late booking to Florian Valot in the 88th minute.

The result kept the Lights pinned near the bottom of the group table. Sacramento leads with 8 points, followed by Spokane with 6 and Boise with 5, while Oakland sits on 4 and Las Vegas remains on 1.

Up next

Las Vegas returns to USL Championship play at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 13, visiting Birmingham Legion FC at Protective Stadium.
