The next World Baseball Classic may feature games in Las Vegas at the Athletics’ $2 billion Strip ballpark. The A’s are interested in hosting games during the next WBC, expected in 2029 or 2030, according to a source familiar with the situation. As a result, the sport of baseball could have a major moment in the city with this event.
What the WBC Means
The WBC was included among these events, with its logo featured in a presentation by Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority president and CEO Steve Hill. Therefore, this demonstrates the growing influence of baseball on international sporting events held in Las Vegas.
“What we outlined here on this page showing some logos is just a partial list of events interested in being in Las Vegas that don’t necessarily have the ability to be held in a venue we have, such as the Major League Baseball All-Star game or the World Baseball Classic,” Hill said during the May 2023 presentation to the Legislature.
MLB representatives did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday about the potential for Las Vegas to host future WBC games. Meanwhile, excitement continues to build as fans await updates related to future baseball events here.
WBC History
This year’s WBC final took place Tuesday night in Miami between the USA and Venezuela. The Miami Marlins’ LoanDepot Park has become a preferred venue for the WBC finals. Hosting the last two championship games, and setting a high standard for baseball tournaments.
The WBC features 20 international teams, mostly professional players, including MLB stars. Teams are divided into four pools of five. The top two from each pool advance to the knockout round. Finally, the final two teams compete for the championship. This format highlights the global passion for baseball.
Las Vegas has rapidly become a premier destination for major sporting events and championships. For this reason, including major baseball matches here is a logical next step for the city’s sports landscape. The city has hosted or will host two Super Bowls (with the 2029 game potentially awarded next month), two WrestleManias (2025, 2026), the 2027 College Football Playoff championship, and the 2028 Men’s NCAA Final Four.
