Ryan Spann Scores KO But Grades Himself Harshly After Win at UFC Fight Night 274

LAS VEGAS — In most cases, a knockout victory paired with a $100,000 bonus would signal a near-perfect night inside the Octagon. But for Ryan Spann, the performance still left plenty to be desired.

Competing on the main card of UFC Fight Night 274 at the UFC APEX, Spann delivered a stoppage win over decorated Brazilian grappler Marcus Buchecha. The victory marked Spann’s second straight, his first back-to-back wins since 2022, and made him the first fighter to finish Buchecha in MMA competition.

Yet despite the highlight-reel result, Spann wasn’t celebrating like most fighters would. “I feel I can do better,” Spann said at the post-fight press conference. “I feel I can look better. I feel like I can look better at it, and that’s what I intend to do — is to get better and grow.”

A Win With Perspective

Spann entered the bout as an underdog, with many expecting Buchecha’s elite-level Brazilian jiu-jitsu to dominate the matchup. Instead, the UFC veteran flipped the narrative, successfully defending grappling exchanges before finding the finish.

Still, Spann graded his performance modestly. “This version of Ryan Spann is going to be better… and the next version is going to eat my lunch,” he added, showing both humor and a relentless drive for improvement.

Game Plan Executed

Facing a 16-time jiu-jitsu world champion in Buchecha, Spann understood the challenge ahead. But rather than being overwhelmed, he remained composed and prepared. “Sixteen-time jiu-jitsu world champion meets a 16-time UFC veteran. That’s it,” Spann said, brushing off the pre-fight hype.

While he admitted to dealing with physical adversity during the fight, including cramping that slowed his pace on the ground, Spann stuck to his strategy. “Nothing necessarily surprised me… I was cramping a little bit, so I kind of slowed down on the ground. But the plan was to make him uncomfortable and that’s what we were doing.”

With two consecutive wins and renewed momentum, Spann appears to be rebuilding his standing in the UFC’s light heavyweight division. However, if his own evaluation is any indication, he’s far from satisfied. For Spann, the knockout wasn’t the destination it was just another step in the evolution.
