MIAMI — Paulo Costa has a new home and he made sure the division felt his presence immediately. In his official light heavyweight debut, Costa delivered a statement performance at UFC 327, stopping previously unbeaten Azamat Murzakanov via third-round TKO in the co-main event at the Kaseya Center. The finish came at 1:23 of Round 3, as a devastating head kick sent Murzakanov crashing to the canvas, forcing referee Keith Peterson to step in.

Costa didn’t rush the moment he built toward it. Early on, the former middleweight title challenger used sharp movement and punishing body kicks to keep Murzakanov at bay. Staying just outside punching range, Costa controlled distance and rhythm while steadily chipping away.

Late in the opening round, Costa turned up the intensity. A knockdown shifted momentum, and he followed it up with brutal ground-and-pound elbows that opened a cut on the Russian before the horn sounded.

A Calculated Start, A Violent Finish

Round two brought adversity. Murzakanov began to find his timing, digging to the body and landing clean shots that briefly had Costa on the defensive. For stretches, the fight became a back-and-forth battle, with both fighters trading momentum.

But even as Murzakanov surged, Costa remained composed and dangerous.

The Head Kick Heard Across 205

By the third round, Costa returned to his most effective weapon: his kicks. He battered Murzakanov’s arms and body, slowly breaking down the defense. Then came the moment that ended it.

Costa feinted low, then went high. The head kick landed flush. Murzakanov stumbled and dropped, and within seconds, the fight was over.

A New Chapter Begins

For Costa, the victory may stand as the most important of his UFC career. Once known for his middleweight run including a title shot this performance signals a fresh start at 205 pounds, and potentially a dangerous new contender entering the mix.

After the fight, Costa made his message clear in his interview with Joe Rogan: “Put some respect on my name.”

With a finish over an undefeated opponent in his divisional debut, Costa immediately inserts himself into the light heavyweight conversation. If this version of Costa patient, technical, and explosive continues to show up, the division just gained a serious problem. And at UFC 327, he proved it in emphatic fashion.
