Dmitry Bivol Returns May 30 to Defend Titles Against IBF Mandatory Michael Eifert

Jon Durr-USA TODAY Sports

Undisputed light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol is officially set to return to the ring. Bivol will defend his collection of titles against IBF mandatory challenger Michael Eifert on May 30 at UGMK Arena in Ekaterinburg, Russia, in an event promoted by RCC Promotions.

The 35-year-old champion hasn’t fought in over a year following back surgery that temporarily halted momentum after one of the biggest wins of his career. “On May 30, I’ll be stepping into the ring,” Bivol said. “I promise to put on a beautiful and exciting fight.”

That “beautiful fight” comes after Bivol avenged the only loss of his career by defeating Artur Beterbiev in their rematch last February  a victory that crowned him undisputed champion at 175 pounds.

Mandatory Duty Over Mega Fights

Despite interest in high-profile bouts, Bivol opted to honor his IBF obligation rather than risk being stripped of a title. Eifert, the IBF’s No. 1 contender, has been waiting for this opportunity since his upset win over former champion Jean Pascal in 2023. Eifert (13-1, 5 KOs) has fought just once since that victory, making this by far the biggest fight of his career.

What’s at Stake for Bivol

Bivol (24-1, 12 KOs) enters as a heavy favorite, but the stakes go beyond just another title defense.

The champion has several major fights looming:

  • A potential trilogy with Artur Beterbiev
  • A long-discussed clash with David Benavidez
  • A possible rematch with Canelo Alvarez

Bivol previously defeated Canelo by unanimous decision in 2022, a win that elevated him to global stardom.

Benavidez and Division Drama

Bivol was previously stripped of his WBC title after choosing not to face Benavidez, who was later elevated to full champion. Benavidez is currently preparing for a May 2 fight against Gilberto Ramirez at cruiserweight but has expressed interest in returning to 175 pounds for a future showdown with Bivol.
