The UFC has officially announced the first middleweight title defense for Khamzat Chimaev. Chimaev will defend his championship against former titleholder Sean Strickland in the main event of UFC 328 on May 9 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Chimaev (15-0) captured the UFC middleweight championship in August with a dominant unanimous decision victory over Dricus Du Plessis. The undefeated star controlled the fight from start to finish, securing one of the most decisive title wins in recent middleweight history. Since that victory, Chimaev has waited several months for his first challenger. Now he’ll defend the belt against one of the division’s most outspoken and battle-tested contenders.
Strickland (30-7) earned the title opportunity after stopping rising contender Anthony “Fluffy” Hernandez last month. The win pushed Strickland back into the championship conversation and secured him the No. 3 ranking in the division. He ultimately received the title shot over No. 2 contender Nassourdine Imavov, who has been on a five-fight win streak but previously lost to Strickland in 2023.
Former Champion Seeking Redemption
Strickland shocked the MMA world in 2023 when he defeated Israel Adesanya by unanimous decision to capture the middleweight title. However, his reign was short-lived. He lost the belt in his first defense to Du Plessis and later dropped a rematch against the South African champion in February 2025. Now Strickland gets another opportunity to reclaim UFC gold.
High-Stakes Clash at UFC 328
The matchup presents a fascinating stylistic contrast:
-
Chimaev: elite wrestling, relentless pressure, undefeated record
-
Strickland: high-volume striking, durability, championship experience
With the middleweight division continuing to evolve, the outcome at UFC 328 could shape the title picture for the rest of 2026.
For Chimaev, it’s the chance to solidify his reign. For Strickland, it’s an opportunity to prove he still belongs at the top of the division.
