A’s beat Padres 7-2 for second straight spring win

The A’s are rolling for the first time this spring.

Oakland beat the San Diego Padres 7-2 on Monday at Peoria Stadium, winning its second straight Cactus League game and improving to 3-6 overall. The A’s jumped on Padres starter Michael King early, kept adding through the first three innings and backed it with steady pitching work from Mason Barnett and a parade of relievers.

Soderstrom goes yard right away

Oakland’s first punch came fast. Nick Kurtz walked to open the game, and Tyler Soderstrom followed with a two-run homer to right-center to make it 2-0 before the Padres could settle in.

The A’s added again in the second. Henry Bolte singled, Junior Perez singled, Kurtz walked and Shea Langeliers drove in two with a single up the middle to push the lead to 4-0.

Third inning breaks it open

Oakland made it a blowout in the third with three more runs, all with two outs. Bolte lined an RBI single to left to score Max Muncy, then a throwing error by Padres third baseman Sung-Mun Song brought home Leo De Vries. Kurtz followed with an RBI single, and the A’s were up 7-0.

Soderstrom finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Langeliers drove in two. Kurtz reached base three times and added an RBI. Bolte went 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Barnett, Basso keep it clean early

Barnett earned the win, working 2 1/3 scoreless innings without allowing a hit. Brady Basso followed with 1 2/3 hitless innings, and the A’s staff held the Padres to five hits.

San Diego’s first run scored in the fifth on Freddy Fermin’s RBI groundout. The Padres added a ninth-inning solo homer from Jase Bowen, but the game was long decided.
