SYDNEY — Fighting on home soil for the first time in his UFC career, Alexander Volkanovski delivered exactly what the moment demanded. In the main event of UFC 325 at Qudos Bank Arena, Volkanovski successfully defended his featherweight title with a composed, five-round unanimous decision victory over Diego Lopes in their rematch.
The judges scored the bout 49-46, 49-46, and 50-45, as Volkanovski (28-4 MMA, 15-3 UFC) consistently stayed a step ahead, denying Lopes (27-8 MMA, 6-3 UFC) a second title win attempt in his last three fights.
Champion Sets the Pace Early
From the opening exchanges, Volkanovski’s footwork, timing, and shot selection defined the fight. The Sydney crowd quickly found its voice, chanting for the hometown champion as he mixed sharp striking with well-timed level changes.
Lopes defended the champ’s first takedown attempt with a quick sprawl and countered effectively, but Volkanovski calmly reset and continued picking his shots. A second takedown entry was cleaner, though Lopes held strong along the fence. On the feet, the early exchanges clearly favored the champion.
Momentum Shifts But Control Remains
Volkanovski continued to dictate range in the second round, darting in and out while Lopes attempted to increase his output. With about two minutes remaining, Lopes landed a clean uppercut that briefly energized the challenger, but Volkanovski responded immediately with a stiff counter of his own.
The round closed with grappling intrigue: Lopes shot for a takedown, Volkanovski jumped on a guillotine that wasn’t there, and Lopes nearly answered with a standing rear-naked choke as the horn sounded. Both fighters shared a brief laugh at the start of Round 3 before locking back in.
