A long-brewing showdown is now official. Mario Barrios will defend his WBC welterweight title against Ryan Garcia on February 21 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, it was announced Monday. The bout will headline “The Ring: High Stakes” on DAZN.

The matchup has been in motion since early November. But Monday’s announcement finalized the details and set the stage for a pivotal welterweight clash between two fighters seeking momentum.

“This is my division, my time, and I’m ready to show the world why the WBC title stays right here,” Barrios said.

“I will be world champion on February 21,” Garcia responded.

Barrios Looks to Stabilize His Reign

Barrios (29-2-2, 18 KOs) enters his first title defense looking to rebound from a run of razor-thin results. In July, the 30-year-old fought Manny Pacquiao to a majority draw a bout many observers felt the 46-year-old icon edged. That followed a November 2024 split draw against Abel Ramos in which Barrios was knocked down.

He initially captured the interim WBC welterweight title in September 2024 with a unanimous decision win over Fabian Maidana, before being elevated to full champion when former undisputed king Terence Crawford exited the division.

Ranked No. 10 by The Ring at 147 pounds. The San Antonio native owns a career-best victory over Yordenis Ugas and has only lost to elite opposition Gervonta Davis and Keith Thurman.

For this camp, Barrios has made a notable change, linking up with trainer Joe Goossen Garcia’s former coach. Goossen previously worked with Garcia for three fights before their split in 2023 following Garcia’s knockout loss to Davis.

Garcia Chasing Redemption at Welterweight

Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs, 1 NC) is looking to reestablish himself after a turbulent stretch. In May, he made his welterweight debut on The Ring’s Times Square card but was dropped and lost a unanimous decision to Rolando Romero. The bout marked Garcia’s return from a one-year suspension. Stemming from a positive test for the banned substance Ostarine following his three-knockdown, majority decision win over Devin Haney a result later ruled a no contest.

Since 2023, Garcia has secured just one victory: an eighth-round knockout of Oscar Duarte, widely viewed as the best win of his career.
