Former middleweight king Gennadiy “Triple G” Golovkin. Hasn’t fought since the conclusion of his heated trilogy with Canelo Alvarez on September 17, 2022. But his presence in boxing is arguably growing, not fading.
Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs), now 42, has shifted his focus to the amateur side of the sport and is bidding for one of its most powerful positions. Last month, he officially declared his candidacy to become President of World Boxing, with the vote set to be decided Sunday in Rome.
Despite his expanding role outside the ropes, Golovkin isn’t fully closing the door on an in-ring return.
“Most likely, if my candidacy is successful, then I will probably announce officially that I have finished with boxing and ended my career,” Golovkin told BBC Sport.
“Although… there is always a possibility. Since I always keep in shape and lead an athletic lifestyle, the option of fighting again is not out of the question.”
Golovkin, who turns 44 in April, will be eligible for induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2026. His legacy as one of the most feared punchers of his era is already secure.
Fighting for Olympic Boxing’s Future
In recent years, Golovkin has stepped deeper into the governance side of the sport. He has served as President of Kazakhstan’s National Olympic Committee and as Chair of World Boxing’s Olympic Commission.
While boxing has been confirmed as part of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Its long-term status on the Olympic program remains uncertain something Golovkin says is unacceptable.
“Boxing has always been an integral part of my life, and right now, the position Olympic boxing is in is unacceptable,” Golovkin said.
“This is a very dangerous situation, and I feel a tremendous desire to help, because there is a real threat that it will not be included in the Olympics after LA28.
I call on all boxing fans, everyone who cares about this sport, to support amateur boxing. Everything starts here.”
Whether or not he ever fights again. Gennadiy Golovkin is clearly preparing for his next major role in the sport not as a champion in the ring, but as one of the key figures trying to keep boxing on the Olympic stage.
