Nevada’s Summerlin South Little League team has advanced to the Little League World Series championship game.
On Saturday, Summerlin South got revenge on by defeating Connecticut by a score of 8-2, winning the United States championship. They will face the international champion Taiwan in the championship game on Sunday.
Garrett Gallegos starred for Nevada, hitting a home run in the fourth inning and pitching five innings to lead his team to victory.
Summerlin South started off hot, landing three runs in the first inning. While Connecticut would cut into the lead, Gallegos’s homer kept some distance for Nevada.
Then, in the fifth inning, Summerlin South took advantage of a critical mistake that lead to momentum shifting completely in their favor.
With Connecticut having runners on first and second base with only one out, a hit would almost guarantee a chance for a comeback. However, one of the baserunners would get caught in a rundown and went out. Gallegos would record his eighth strikeout of the game against the next batter, and his team would finish the job with four runs in the sixth inning.
Should Summerlin South defeat Taiwan, they will secure the first Little League World Series championship in state history.
