The honors keep rolling in for Las Vegas Aces forward A’ja Wilson this season.
On Tuesday, Wilson was named Western Conference Player of the Week for the third time this season, also claiming the awards on June 3 and July 1.
With this recent honor being the 25th time she was won the award in her career, Wilson now has the sole claim to the third-most Player of the Week awards in WNBA history, overtaking Elena Delle Donne. Only Tina Charles (32) and Candace Parker (27) have more in their careers.
As of August 11, Wilson leads the WNBA in blocks (2.1 per game), second in scoring (22.2 points per game) and rebounding (9.6 per game) and sixth in steals (1.6 per game). With those high marks, she is building a strong case for herself to win an unprecedented fourth MVP award.
Wilson all but clinched this award with her performance against the Connecticut Sun on Sunday, becoming the first player in WNBA history to notch a 30-20 double-double by recording 32 points and 20 rebounds in the Aces’ 94-86 victory.
“It’s huge,” said Wilson in the postgame media conference on Sunday. “I didn’t even know, as many greats as we have in this league, it’s kind of a shocker that it’s just now happening. It’s a blessing. I love what I do. I love what I do. I love it so much, so anytime that I can come out and just play basketball the way that I love it, and the team, and we’re all getting involved – I’m happy with that.”
It capped off a strong week for Wilson, who started by putting up 27 points against the Golden State Valkyries on Wednesday. Then, on her 29th birthday on Friday, Wilson dropped 29 points and 12 rebounds on the Seattle Storm. Her performances have helped kickstart a four-game winning streak for the Aces, as well as helping the team win six of their last seven games.
With Wilson helping to guide the Aces back to the postseason, she is continuing to prove why she is on the path to becoming the greatest player of all time.
