The Athletics will host the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday. The first pitch will be at 7:05 p.m. PST at Sutter Health Park.
After suffering a tough 10-1 defeat to the A’s last night, the Braves are eager to bounce back, potentially with Ronald Acuna Jr. returning to the lineup after being a late scratch in the previous game.
Bringing Acuna back could provide the Braves with a much-needed boost as they strive to recover from their recent loss.
Unfortunately, they currently sit at the bottom of the league in scoring over the past 15 days, managing only 2.4 runs per game across their last 12 outings.
Pitching Matchup
Bryce Elder will start for Atlanta, but he’s struggled this season with a 2–6 record and a 5.92 ERA, failing to pitch five innings in his last four starts.
He has allowed 22 earned runs over 15.2 innings, with a troubling xERA above 6.10 and a 1.61 WHIP.
Left-handed hitters have particularly capitalized on him, posting a .390 wOBA and a 1.021 OPS, which is concerning given the five lefty bats in the A’s lineup.
For the Athletics, Mitch Spence offers some potential. He has a 2–4 record and a 4.06 ERA. His 3.77 xFIP and 1.19 WHIP suggest he might be outperforming expectations.
He keeps games manageable with a chase rate of 32% in July and effective hard contact suppression on his sinker (.287 xSLG).

In contrast, the A’s have been more productive, averaging 4.6 runs per game during the same period. As for the pitching matchup, both Elder and Spence have struggled lately, making it tough to have confidence in either pitcher.
However, despite the Braves’ offensive challenges, both teams will likely have plenty of chances to score on Wednesday.
Look for the A’s to pounce early against Elder, and the Braves should manage to score a few runs themselves against Spence.
The Athletics’ bullpen ERA is second-worst in baseball, at 5.68; the Braves’ is 3.59. Considering everything, the over is worth a look in this matchup.
