On Tuesday, the Las Vegas Aces will take on the Connecticut Sun, with both teams aiming for their first victories of the season.
The Aces kicked off the season on Saturday with a disappointing 92-78 defeat against the New York Liberty, marking a rematch from last year’s playoffs.
The absence of Kelsey Plum, who joined the Sparks during the offseason, was notably felt as Las Vegas struggled to find its scoring rhythm.
They ended up shooting just 34.1% from the field and only 34% accurately on shots within the arc. Last season, the Aces ranked second in the league for offensive efficiency, boasting a 51.6% shooting percentage on two-point shots.
While they may still be adjusting to the offense without Plum, it’s also possible they faced a tough challenge against a well-coordinated Liberty defense.
In the offseason, the Sun underwent significant changes, losing five of their six top scorers, with only Marina Mabrey remaining.
They did bring in UConn legend Tina Charles, who had an impressive performance with 23 points and 10 rebounds during Sunday’s game, despite the team’s loss to the Mystics.
Nevertheless, the Sun have struggled on the boards, getting out-rebounded 70-58 over the course of two games. This season will likely be much tougher for Connecticut after their outstanding performance in the 2024 campaign.
On the other hand, the Aces have consistently been one of the strongest teams in the league in recent years, and I expect them to recover well after facing a formidable Liberty squad.
I think the Aces bounce back in a big way tonight against the rebuilding Sun tonight.
